October is Breast Screening Awareness Month
October 4th, 2025
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a great reminder to look after your health and book your mammogram if you’re due.
Regular breast screening is the best way to detect breast cancer early – when it’s most treatable. Women aged 45 to 69 are eligible for free mammograms every two years through BreastScreen Aotearoa.
Who can have a free mammogram?
- Women aged 45–69 who have no symptoms of breast cancer
- Women who haven’t had a mammogram in the past two years
If you’re outside this age range, talk to your GP or nurse about other screening options.
How to book
You don’t need a referral – you can self-refer.

Why screening matters
- Breast cancer affects 1 in 9 Kiwi women in their lifetime.
- Screening can detect cancers that are too small to feel.
- Early detection saves lives.
This October, take a moment to check if you or your loved ones are up to date with breast screening. A simple mammogram could make all the difference.
