Breast Screening in Aotearoa: Have You Booked Your Free Mammogram?

February 16th, 2026

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women in New Zealand. The good news is that when it is found early, treatment is often more effective and outcomes are significantly better.

That is why regular mammograms are so important.

New Age Range for Free Breast Screening

BreastScreen Aotearoa now offers free mammograms to women aged 45 to 74 years.

If you are within this age range and have not had a mammogram in the last two years, you are eligible for a free screening.

Regular screening every two years can detect breast cancer early, often before you can feel or see any changes.

Why Screening Matters

A mammogram can:

  • Detect breast cancer early, before symptoms appear
  • Reduce the risk of dying from breast cancer
  • Provide reassurance if no changes are found

Even if you feel well and have no symptoms, screening is still important.

How to Book

To book your free mammogram, contact:

You do not need a referral from your GP to book a screening mammogram.

If you notice any breast changes such as a lump, skin changes, or nipple discharge, please book an appointment with your GP at Upper Hutt Health Centre as soon as possible. Screening mammograms are for women without symptoms.
