Measles Update: Protect Yourself and Your Whānau
October 29th, 2025
With confirmed measles cases now in Wellington, it’s a timely reminder to ensure you and your whānau are protected. Aotearoa New Zealand is at high risk of a measles outbreak, and even one case in our Hutt Valley community could put many at risk.
Measles is highly contagious—far more than the flu or COVID-19. It can lead to serious health complications including pneumonia, permanent hearing loss, brain swelling, and in some cases, can be life-threatening. Around one in three children who contract measles may require hospital care.
Check Your Immunisation Status
The MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella) is fully funded in New Zealand for anyone who has not had two documented doses.
If you’re unsure whether you’ve had both MMR vaccinations, it’s best to check and be safe.
If you believe you have not received two doses, you can book an appointment with us here at Upper Hutt Health Centre.
Why Vaccination Matters
- Measles spreads extremely easily – much faster than the flu or COVID-19.
- Two doses of MMR provide the best protection for you and those around you.
- Immunisation helps protect vulnerable people, including babies, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.
