ADHD assessment changes update
February 4th, 2026
What is changing?
From 1 February 2026, national changes across Aotearoa mean that some specially trained General Practitioners (GPs) and Nurse Practitioners may be able to diagnose and initiate treatment for adult ADHD.
This is a significant change to how ADHD care may be delivered in primary care settings in the future.
Will this be available at Upper Hutt Health Centre?
ADHD assessments require a comprehensive clinical review. We are currently exploring the development of a dedicated ADHD service at our practice.
This process will take time. Any GPs or Nurse Practitioners with a special interest in ADHD will need to complete the required training before this service can be offered. At this stage, no additional funding has been provided to general practices to support training or service delivery.
We will share updates as this work progresses.
What can we offer now?
In the meantime, we can continue to refer patients to external providers for ADHD assessment, such as private psychiatrists or other specialist clinics.
If you have questions or would like to discuss your options, please book an appointment with your GP or Nurse Practitioner. Standard consultation fees apply.
